Join a "Table for 10" for EDs, Board Chairs, CFOs
The Roundtable has begun a new series of Tables for Ten. Each group of 10 engages in a series of three monthly lunchtime discussions for candid peer exchange. (Note: the previously announced "Tables" for executive directors and communication directors filled up quickly.) Tables for Ten that you can still sign up for (all from noon-2pm):

  • Table for Ten for Board Chairs on October 27 facilitated by Pete Smith -- please note attached flyer which you can forward to your board chair;
  • Table for EDs will start on November 17 with Fran Becker (Carpenter's Shelter);
  • Table for Ten for Chief Financial Officers on December 7 facilitated by Kenny Emson (Community Foundation).

Roundtable Events
October 19: The Roundtable and the Meyer Foundation will host David La Piana for two events: Nonprofit Mergers: 10:30am and Beyond Strategic Planning at 1:00pm, both at 1600 P Street, NW, Washington. The first event will also feature case studies of Roundtable members who have been involved with mergers. These events are appropriate for Roundtable CEOs, board members, and senior staff involved in strategic planning. RSVP for one or both events (and lunch) to Mary or (202) 263-4711.

November 16: The Roundtable and the Nonprofit Finance Fund will host Clara Miller (of the Nonprofit Finance Fund) for an event called "Balancing Money and Mission" on November 16 at the Bank of America, 730 15th Street, NW in the District. (Breakfast served at 8:30am; Clara will begin at 9:00am, and a panel discussion at 10:00am). How do nonprofits fulfill the public interest while remaining financially sound (also known as "doing ten things with the funding for seven")? [RSVP to Mary.]

Independent Sector Conference
The next Independent Sector conference will take place in Washington DC, Oct. 23-25. Roundtable Members can attend at IS Member rates. (Contact Eduardo if you have questions.) There are also opportunities to volunteer during the conference which offers benefits to attend parts of the conference.

Members in the News
Roundtable Member Fannie Mae Foundation, Affiliate Member America Online, and Affiliate Member Lyles Carr of McCormick Group are all expected to receive major awards on National Capital Philanthropy Day, November 14. The Roundtable is a Co-Sponsor of this event. (Roundtable CEOs may RSVP to Mary to obtain one of eight seats at our table at the November 14 event.)

Aspen Institute's Alan J. Abramson, along with Lester M. Salamon, released The Nonprofit Sector and the Federal Budget: Fiscal Year 2006 and Beyond, a report that found federal funds to nonprofit organizations could be cut as much as $71.5 billion over the next five years, according to a press release and OMB Watch.

Audubon Naturalist Society's role in stream monitoring was cited in the Washington Post.

Affiliate Member Bank of America created a National Community Advisory Council (NCAC), comprised of nationally prominent leaders in community development, to address critical issues affecting affordable homeownership, economic development and the revitalization of the nation's distressed and under-served communities, according to this press release.

The Cafritz Foundation and Fannie Mae Foundation, among others, are sponsoring the first-ever Duke Ellington Jazz Festival according to a press release.

The Campagna Center's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has been named the outstanding RSVP in Virginia for 2005 and will receive the Governor's Award on Oct 6 in Richmond.

The Center for Inspired Teaching was included in an article on teachers and educators who blog, in the New York Sun. Jenna Fournel said that, "Teaching can be an alienating profession. With blogs, they can network and share ideas."

CentroNia's introduction of a national literacy program 'Lee y Seras' ('Read and you will Be') was featured in a front page article in the Washington Hispanic and in a press release.

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region's Survivors' Fund released their newest Report to the Community.

The Community Foundation and Common Ground Fund are hosting their next Putting Race on the Table forum on 10:30am, October 17, at 1200 U Street, NW, in the District. 'Parents as Leaders for Academic Success' will continue their focus on the achievement gap and the important role that parent leadership plays in reducing the achievement gap. Dance Place's Carla Perlo was praised effusively in the Washington Times. "When Carla Perlo founded Dance Place in 1980, the city had a fractured dance scene. ... Twenty-five years later, Washington is a mecca for young choreographers and dancers. It would be hard to overestimate the role Dance Place has played in this transformation."

DC Fiscal Policy Institute released 'New Census Data Show DC's Affordable Housing Crisis Is Worsening' which shows that average rent rates in the district increased 9% and that 11,800 affordable homes were lost, according to the Washington Post and the Associated Press.

DC Vote is "surely gaining traction. Newspapers around the nation are running editorials in support of the vote," according to a recent Harry Jaffe op-ed in the DC Examiner. DC Vote is also holding its next American Democracy for America's Capital Monthly Happy Hour on October 6, at 6:00 (click here for a map).

Earth Conservation Corps's Glen Ogilvie was cited on the Anacostia River water quality in the Georgetown Voice. He said that, "Anacostia fish have developed the highest rate of cancer ever recorded in an American waterway." An accompanying editorial said ECC was part of the solution for the Anacostia.

Family and Child Services received the award for Outstanding Agency of the Year from the Consortium for Child Welfare.

The Fannie Mae Foundation's Annual Help the Homeless Walkathon will be on November 19.

The Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital's successful efforts to reach out to the Latina community was featured in the Washington Post.

Greater DC Cares' Danny Talmage was featured in the DC Examiner commenting on Greater DC Cares work on rebuilding of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.

Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington and Clark Lobenstine will be honored by the Religion Communicators Council "for their ability to communicate faith and values" according to a press release. On September 27 (7:30pm) ICMW will be presenting the Washington premiere of the film 'Three Faiths, One God: Judaism, Christianity, Islam,' according to this invitation.

Local Initiatives Support Corporation's 25 Anniversary event was celebrated in David Broder's Washington Post column who cited Oramenta Newsome and grantee Latin American Youth Center.

The Meyer Foundation's Albert Ruesga was cited in an article about the challenge of advocacy work in the Washington region in the DC Examiner. Meyer's Rick Moyers was cited in an article about nonprofit 'watchdogs' or 'ratings' in the Chronicle of Philanthropy. "We have the same information that the rating would be based on, and generally do more extensive probing and legwork."

National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship was highlighted in the last question of an interview with Tien Wong, CEO of Opus8, in the Maryland Gazette.

Northern Virginia Community College's Bob Templin will chair the Northern Virginia Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Working Group, according to this press release.

Northern Virginia Family Service recently announced Allan Ratner, formerly of the Freddie Mac Foundation, as their new Board Chair, according to The Connection.

NPower Greater DC Region is co-sponsoring a conference focused on data integration, "Pulling it all Together: Data Integration's Impact on Raising Money and Fulfilling your Mission". NPower is also coordinating the AOL Tech Corps which is "currently seeking nonprofits to receive free Computer Lab Installations." The deadline for applications is October 31.

SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) was the featured partner of Ballston's Bloctoberfest, according to the Arlington Connection. "We hope by the assistance we are providing we will prevent future child abuse and neglect," said Diane Charles, SCAN's executive director. Blocktoberfest gives SCAN the opportunity to reach out to a younger demographic.

Suited for Change's Mary-Frances Wain styled maternity clothes earlier this summer in an article in the Washington Post. "Pregnant does not have to mean dowdy. In fact, maternity clothes can look an awful lot like non-maternity clothes."

TouchDC will be holding a training session, "Learn How to Earn Online" on Sept. 27 at Maryland Nonprofits' offices.

United For DC's 'United Drive' in September collects soccer equipment to benefit DC Scores, according to a press release. They also successfully held held their annual United for D.C. Celebrity Golf Tournament, according to a press release.

The United Way for the National Capital Area's Loudoun County 2005 campaign kick-off was featured in Leesburg Today.

Washington Grantmakers and the Washington AIDS Partnership invite you to attend "HIV/AIDS in the Nation's Capital: Improving the District of Columbia's Response to a Public Health Crisis". The event will include speakers from the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, Metro TeenAIDS, and Our Place.

The Washington Scholarship Fund-administered school voucher program in the District has reached full capacity in its second year of operation, according to this press release and the Washington Post. Sally Sachar said that "officials are working on several fronts to increase the number of slots."

The Whitman-Walker Clinic in Arlington will remain open through December 2006 due to funding form Alexandria City, and Arlington and Fairfax counties, according to Connection Newspapers.

Words, Beat and Life will be having a Journal mixer on October 20 at 8pm at Felix in Adams Morgan which may bring the featured visual artist from the November issue of their Journal.

We warmly welcome Adam Tenner, Executive Director of Metro TeenAIDS. Metro TeenAIDS provides resources to help young people fight AIDS and support each other. Unlike any other organization in the Washington, DC area, Metro TeenAIDS focuses all of its efforts on the special prevention, education, and treatment needs of young people. They were recently featured in the Washington Post and on the cover of the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Wider Opportunities for Women released 'The Self-Sufficiency Standard for the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Area 2005, according to this press release and the Washington Post. "The combined impact of a "housing bubble" and escalating health and child care costs are making it more and more difficult for families in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area to make ends meet." The report was funded by the Freddie Mac Foundation.
