Roundtable Event: Balancing Money & Mission
November 16: The Roundtable will host Clara Miller (of the Nonprofit Finance Fund) for an event called "Balancing Money and Mission" on November 16 at the Bank of America, 730 15th Street, NW in the District. (Breakfast served at 8:30am; Clara will begin at 9:00am with a panel to follow; to conclude by 11:00am). How do nonprofits fulfill the public interest while remaining financially sound? How does one run a public benefit corporation as a sustainable business enterprise?

The Independent Sector held its Annual Conference this week and included presentations and participation by many Roundtable Members including the Aspen Institute's Alan Abramson, the Community Foundation's Terri Lee Freeman and Bridgestar. Sponsors of the conference included AOL, Bank of America, the Community Foundation, the Fannie Mae Foundation, the Freddie Mac Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, the Meyer Foundation, the Morino Institute and The Summit Fund of Washington.
Arlington Community Foundation's Spirit of Community 2005 Award luncheon on Nov. 15 honoring youth mentor and benefactor Ralph Johnson of Johnson Associates was included in the Washington Post.
Audubon Naturalist Society of Northern Virginia held a tree-planting ceremony with Congressman Jim Moran and Virginia State Sen. Janet Howell in attendance, according to the Times Community. The event also featured the release of a new Audubon Society book, "The Nature of Change-Preserving the Natural Heritage of a Dynamic Region."
Affiliate Member Bank of America announced their Neighborhood Excellence Initiative Awardees: Carpenter's Shelter and Higher Achievement Program, according to the DC Examiner. Miriam's Kitchen's volunteer Michael Lesparre was also named as one of their Local Heros.
The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington may have a club opening in Loudoun County according to Leesburg Today.
Bread For The City hosted a fundraiser featuring stand-up comics at the Mayflower Hotel, according to the Washington Times. Attendees included DC Mayor Williams among others.
The Cafritz Foundation's former CEO Ann Allen and the Freddie Mac Foundation's Maxine Baker were honored at the CASA for Children's Community Reception for DC's Powerful Voices, according to a press release.
Carpenter's Shelter recently received a $1 million grant from the Hoffman Family Trust
and "hopes to make a transformation into something far more comprehensive," according to the Washington Post.
Coalition for the Homeless, along with Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness, will begin to provide facility upkeep to a Southwest shelter, according to the Washington Post. The article also cited the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.

DC Fiscal Policy Institute's recent report on 'DC's Affordable Housing Crisis is Worsening' which states that the District has lost an estimated 12,000 affordable housing units, was cited in an opinion piece in the Washington Post. DCFPI's Ed Lazere was cited in a story on retailers and development in North East DC in the Washington Business Journal.
DC Vote held "Champions of Democracy" to recognize leaders in voting rights activism to over 250 attendees, according to the DCist blog. Freddie Mac Foundation had donated $475,000 to Catholic Community Services to help with Katrina relief and will "adopt" by providing them with donated goods, according to
U.S. Newswire. Separately, the Freddie Mac Foundation was the founding partner of "National Care Package Day," where care packages were assembled and sent to "2,500 college students who had aged out of foster care," according to a press release.
Goodwill of Greater Washington opened its first Loudoun County location this month and plans to open 20 more locations in the DC area by 2010, according to Loudoun Business.
Greater DC Cares awarded James V. Kimsey with their "Spark a Change Legacy Award," according to the Washington Times. Greater DC Cares also had several volunteer opportunities described in the DC Examiner this last week.
Higher Achievement Program was awarded by NPower of Greater DC the Technology Innovation Award which honors nonprofits in the metro Washington, DC area whose innovative use of technology has helped them improve key aspects of their operations and more effectively fulfill their missions.

Maryland Nonprofit's Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute has released a new report, The "Why's" of Maryland's TANF Program: State Spending on Cash Assistance and Child Care Services Decline. "Over the past several years, Maryland has disinvested state money in work supports for families in poverty. Despite a 70% decline in case loads, Maryland has not maintained cash grants at the statutory level and cut funding for child care services."

United For DC held their Annual United Awards Reception this week and awarded grants to six local youth organizations including to The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, DC Scores, and the Latin American Youth Center.
United Way of the National Capital Area is helping IBM determine schools to donate computers to, according to a press release. "Centers and pre-schools will receive 45 brightly colored computer units nicknamed 'Young Explorers'."
Venture Philanthropy Partner's Mario Morino and Carol Thompson Cole wrote an op-ed on social investment in the Washington Business Journal. "The devastating aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina are a microcosm of what's happening in hundreds of urban centers and rural hamlets across America. ... Post-Katrina, we have an opportunity to set a different course for our country ... The real issue is not whether we do this, but can we afford not to?"
The Washington Area Women's Foundation announced their eighteen Stepping Stone grantee partners at their annual Leadership Luncheon including DC Employment Justice Center; Goodwill of Greater Washington and WORC; Northern Virginia Family Service; and the YWCA National Capital Area, according to a press release. Louisiana's Senator Mary Landrieu was among the featured speakers.
The Washington Region for Justice and Inclusion will be presenting 'The Person Behind the Face' at the Montgomery County Diversity Celebration on Oct. 27.
The Washington Scholarship Fund received positive feedback on their school voucher program in a study conducted by Georgetown Public Policy Institute's School Choice Demonstration Project, according to the university's newspaper The Hoya. "The new study that indicated that participants in a D.C.-based voucher program, the first of its kind, are pleased with the program's impact on their education."
