Tables for Ten - Sign Up Now!
Dates for the Roundtable's new set of Tables for Ten are set. Each group of ten engages in a series of three monthly lunchtime discussions for candid peer exchange. Roundtable Events
On March 21, from 9:30am-4:00pm the Roundtable will co-host with the Nonprofit Centers Network and the Nonprofit Finance Fund, a workshop on multi-tenant nonprofit centers (nonprofit incubators, etc). This workshop will provide an overview of the mission, governance, planning, financial and real estate considerations involved in creating multi-tenant nonprofit centers. Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center's Jayne Park and Child & Family Network Centers' Barbara Mason were among the 15 selected as Washingtonians of the Year by Washingtonian Magazine. Pepco's John Derrick was also selected in part for his leadership with the United Way for the National Capital Area.
The American Red Cross' Linda Mathes and the Roundtable's Chuck Bean were cited in The Examiner in an article about nonprofit collaboration. In addressing the nonprofit sector's role in disaster response, Chuck described the Red Cross as the "hub", saying that "They have scale, the systems and the experience. Other nonprofits cover other gaps-long-term housing, mental health, provision of food, home repair, animal assistance - but ideally, we're all working together."

Aspen Institute's Nonprofit Sector Research Fund's Alan Abramson co-authored Federal Appropriations Recap: Impact on Nonprofits which estimates that discretionary federal spending on programs of interest to nonprofits will fall by $4.6 billion.
The Audubon Naturalist Society is the trustee of the Rust Nature Sanctuary Manor House, in Leesburg, and they were featured in the Frederick News Post. Separately, the Manor House will host the Loudoun Arts Council's third Designer Showhouse, according to the Times Community and the Washington Post.
Affiliate Member Bank of America has committed $500,000 to the Washington Area Housing Trust Fund to spur affordable housing development in neighborhoods throughout Greater Washington, according to the Washington Post and a press release. Bank of America's investment will enable WAHTF to finance affordable housing for more residents of the metropolitan region through predevelopment and other short term loans necessary to secure property in today's competitive real estate environment.
CentroNia is celebrating its 20th anniversary and year-long events will begin in early March.
Child & Family Network Centers was highlighted in an article describing the free pre-school CFNC provides to immigrant families, according to the Washington Post.
The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region's Katrina Open Arms Fund has raised more than $345,000, providing funds to 10 nonprofits providing support to Katrina victims including Reston Interfaith, according to the Washington Post and The Examiner. CFNCR's Kathy Whelpley said, "the nonprofit sector is really focused on the longer term recovery and more on the impacts of the community. It's more about recovery and rebuilding your life."
Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, in partnership with Verizon's Disability Issues Awareness Leaders, will provide 53 children in Greater Washington memberships to the National Braille Press' book club for children, according to a Verizon press release.
CrisisLink's Carol Loftur-Thun and the Roundtable's Chuck Bean spoke at the Arlington Committee of 100 on 'How Will Arlington's Human Service Non-Profits Survive In A Booming Arlington And What Does That Mean For Arlington?'
DC Action for Children is hosting their first annual Capital Champions for Children awards luncheon on February 17th.
DC Employment Justice Center and DC Fiscal Policy Institute were among the organizations consulted by Jewish community leaders as organize their Living Wage Campaign in DC, according to Washington Jewish Week. (The Washington Post had an article on the living wage campaign as well.)
DC Hunger Solutions's parent organization, The Food Research and Action Center hosts their annual anti-hunger policy conference February 26-28, in Washington, D.C. The conference, "Ending Hunger in a Land of Plenty: Experience Gained and an Agenda for the Future", brings together a diverse group of more than 350 advocates from anti-hunger and anti-poverty groups.
DC Vote encouraged a group that was exploring forming an OlympicsTeam from the District to dramatize the lack of representation, according to Roll Call.
Earth Conservation Corps was featured in an article on their River of Hope program which seeks empower disenfranchised youth. Glen Ogilvie says, "We're trying to raise them up to be leaders who mobilize their communities," according to the Washington Times.
Fairfax Futures launched their School Readiness Network, a public-private venture to support early childhood education in Fairfax County, according to a press release, the Washington Post and Channel 7. The Freddie Mac Foundation is among the major investors in this project. Other members of the Network include Center for Multicultural Human Services, Jewish Social Service Agency, and Northern Virginia Family Service.
Friends of Fort Dupont Ice Arena had a fantastic profile the Washington Post. "Fort Dupont's program has three things going for it: 1) It's free. 2) Helmets and skates are provided at no charge. 3) And, oh, yeah: The coach competed on the 1992, '94 and '98 U.S. Olympic teams." Kathy Cox says, ""It doesn't matter how good a skater is, if he sees a young kid come in that wants to learn, the first thing he wants to do is reach down and help him."
Goodwill of Greater Washington will again host the AARP free tax services for seniors over 55 and people with disabilities through April 14, according to this press release.

MedStar Health was lauded for its effective use of employee surveys to generate system changes and organizational improvements that yielded a higher employee satisfaction, according to the Washington Post.
Northern Virginia Community College's' Bob Templin framed the immigration issue in a forceful way in a Marc Fisher column in the Washington Post. He stated, "We're talking about a disproportionate amount of attention being devoted to a very small group. Education for the immigrant is the gateway to the American dream."

Piedmont Environment Council was involved with placing 2,631 Loudoun County acres in permanent conservation last year, according to a press release and the Times Community. PEC was among organizations who supported Governor Kaine's proposed legislation to help local governments better manage growth, according to The Examiner. Finally, PEC is opening a new office in Culpeper, according to a press release.
SCAN: Stop Child Abuse Now' Diane Charles letter to the Editor in the Washington Post highlighted SCAN's new weekly Educational Parent Support Group and Developmental Playgroup which provide Spanish-speaking parents and guardians with workshops and literature that discuss Arlandria's many resources for families in need.
Reston Interfaith and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce's 'Best of Reston', an award to businesses, individuals and organizations that have gone above and beyond in their service to improving the quality of life in Reston, will be held on April 20, according to the Connection.
United Community Ministries was among the 30 organizations that met for the 'Route 1 Task Force's' first meeting of 2006, according to The Connection. "Two topics given special attention were Fairfax County's psychiatric patient detention program and the Youth Initiative Program being undertaken jointly by United Community Ministries and the county Department of System Management for Human Resources."
