December 1: The Roundtable's Policy Series will host a lunch with Virginia House Democratic Caucus Chairman Del. Brian Moran (D-46). He will offer his take on Virginia's budget, what the political landscape looks like going into the 2007 Virginia state elections, and engage in a Q & A session. Terry Gainer completed a term of six months as the Roundtable's Director of Emergency Preparedness and is now Vice President of MPRI, a 3L Communications company, responsible for the International Law Enforcement Group in Afghanistan and Iraq. Terry was able to advance the Roundtable's work significantly particularly in his leadership at the Council of Government's Long-Term Community Recovery Committee and leveraged new resources for our policy agenda in the Department of Homeland Security's Urban Area Security Initiative. The Roundtable is now searching for a new Director for Emergency Preparedness (submit resumes to Chuck).

The Nonprofit Congress concluded today following a vote on three priorities that nonprofit state associations and others will focus on in the near future (Click here to learn more):

  • Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness - including leadership and accountability
  • Public Awareness and Support of the Nonprofit Sector
  • Advocacy and Grassroots Community Activities

Awards and Reports
Affiliate Member Chevy Chase Trust's held an Oct 5 forum on their sponsorship of a study on 'Wealth Transfer Estimates in the Metropolitan Washington DC Area, 2001 to 2055.' (Here is the October 2006 power point presentation of the study.) The Women's Foundation's Anne Mosle blogged about the forum which included Venture Philanthropy Partner's Mario Morino and the Community Foundation's Terri Freeman. Earlier this summer, the Washington Post ran a story on the study and the Community Foundation's Terri Freeman co-wrote an op-ed about it for The Examiner.

Maryland Nonprofits and the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies published the Maryland Nonprofit Employment Update which presents new information on the size, distribution, and growth of the private nonprofit sector in Maryland, according to a press release.

Members in the News
Alexandria Community Trust's Alexandria Nonprofit Excellence Forum was featured in The Connection. Venture Philanthropy Partner's Mario Morino keynote address was titled, "Raising the Bar for Operational Effectiveness and Excellence."

Affiliate Member AOL has released its parental control software available for free online. The software is designed to help parents protect their children from inappropriate or dangerous online material.

Bridgestar released an expanded "Guide to Navigating the Hiring Process" for Nonprofit Organizations according to this press release. (You have to fill in a free registration to access the report.)

DC Action for Children's Susie Cambria addressed the District's Committee on the Judiciary on the DC governments response to this summers "Crime Emergency." She was also a panelist on the ACLU's Citizen Crime Coalition Summit which was featured on WTOP. (You can listen to the clip.)

DC Appleseed's Walter Smith moderated an AIDS forum with Whitman-Walker Clinic according to the Washington Times.

Emmaus Services for the Aging is partnering with SeniorNet and together they will open a Computer Learning Center on Oct 18, offering free computer access and education to low-income older adults, according to a press release.

The Fannie Mae Foundation will sponsor the Help the Homeless Walkathon on Nov 18, on the National Mall. Click here to learn more and how to register for the Walkathon.

The Freddie Mac Foundation has partnered with Enterprise Community Partners to "bridge affordable housing residents with social services," according to this press release. "Enterprise is using the metro DC area as its model laboratory to prove that tying affordable housing together with access to training, after-school programs, and other social services will help families move out of poverty."

Affiliate Members Deloitte & Touche and IBM were featured in an article on corporate volunteerism in The Examiner. Deloitte's Emily Rothberg said, "Philanthropy is more than writing a check but hopefully we're fully engaged in the company, and monetary donations are just part of that equation."

Greater DC Cares won The Volunteer Center Award for Innovation from the Points of Light Foundation this year. In addition, Greater DC Cares' work was featured in the Washington Times.

Higher Achievement's grand opening at Alexandria's Hammond Middle School was featured in The Connection where Richard Tagle said, "The opportunity to offer motivated young people the chance to develop their love of learning by achieving academic success is at the very heart of Higher Achievement's work."

Latin American Youth Center is partnering with Comcast Cares Day with about 250 volunteers in Silver Spring to build a playground and do landscaping, according to a press release. Separately, LAYC's Mai Fernandez was cited in an article 'How Not To Fight Gang Violence' in The New Republic.

Maryland Nonprofits' Maryland Budget and Tax Policy Institute was included in article about Maryland's structural budget deficit - an estimated $1 billion next year - in the Baltimore Sun.

Miriam's Kitchen's "management dashboard" with about two dozen sets of statistics that its executive director and the governing board review monthly, was included in an article on 'performance-monitoring tools' in The Chronicle for Philanthropy. Piedmont Environmental Council continues to work on limiting 500-kilovolt power lines being built in several Virginia counties as described in the Times Community. PEC's Chris Miller called for a fair debate on the issues in the Loudoun Connection. PEC research and staff were cited in an article about Loudon County funds for land development in The Washington Post.

ROOT's Ava Harrison graduated from the DC Mayor's Strengthening Partners Initiative.

Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless and other advocacy organizations were able to keep open the Franklin Shelter according to the Washington Post and the Committee to Save Franklin Shelter site. WLCH's Patty Fugere said, "This has been a long battle. It was an incredible example of people finding their voices and persuading the 'powers that be' to make the right decision.

The Wendt Center's Susan Ley participated in a press conference with DC Mayor Williams announcing the federal funding award that will assist in the creation of a first ever Victim Training Academy in DC.

Washington Region for Justice & Inclusion's Cheryl Kravitz wrote a letter on the "demeaning" name of the Washington Redskins in the Washington Post.

The Whitman-Walker Clinic has begun an "HIV Reality Check" ad campaign to point out that the percentage of adults living with HIV in D.C. is higher than that in 27 of the 44 sub-Saharan nations, according to this press release. Separately, the Clinic was also a featured 'Heart of the Community' in The Examiner.

Mae Best is the Executive Director of the East River Family Strengthening Collaborative. Earlier this year, ERFSC co-hosted the first annual Hip Hop Summit and Talent Showcase at Kelly Miller Middle School with over 300 participants, according to the Washington Informer and this MySpace entry. Women Empowered Against Violence's (WEAVE) new Director of Operations is Elizabeth Shrader, who served most recently as executive director of the Community Research and Learning (CoRAL) Network.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is recruiting a new class of Casey Children and Family Fellows, "designed for outstanding executives who lead major community-based service organizations or advocacy initiatives committed to improving outcomes for children, families, and communities" according to a letter from the Foundation's President, Doug Nelson. The Fellowship begins in April 2007. You may nominate someone online by clicking their website entering the username: nominate and password: fellows. The Virginia Network of Nonprofit Organizations is exploring the feasibility of creating a group health insurance plan and the potential nonprofit "market" in Virginia.
